How Solenoid Valves Are Used in the Oil and Gas Industry

A solenoid valve is a device that controls the flow of hydraulic process gas or air. They are primarily used for controlling pneumatic actuation devices like cylinder assemblies, turbines (pneumatically operated), diaphragm assemblies, and pipes. Pneumatic solenoid solenoids and actuation forms are often used in conjunction with other pneumatic machines to complete specific tasks.

A solenoid valve is designed to maintain a certain working pressure to prevent the hydraulic systems from overshooting their operating pressure range. Solenoid fluids are injected into the piston or drum which raises the working pressure, thereby lowering the threshold of operating pressures above the predetermined level. The solenoid valve then lowers the threshold and the flow control is once again implemented to maintain the desired operating pressure range.

The solenoid valve is generally made from a small-sized annular cavity filled with gas to dampen the operation. The larger the cavity, the more control is provided and the faster the reaction time. The larger solenoid solids allow for a fast-changing of the working pressure, therefore maintaining the constant working pressure despite variations in external environmental conditions. The larger the cavity, the faster the de-energization response time is obtained, thereby enabling the process to complete the desired task more rapidly.

Solenoid actuation occurs when a small permanent magnet attracts or repels a small electric current. This attraction and repellent cause the current to split into two: the induced current in the form of a charge, and the conductive current flowing through the solenoid valve.

As the solenoid valve opens, the gas inside the orifice fills up the cavities until the valve is fully open. When the solenoid valve is closed, the amount of gas in the orifice decreases, and the flow control is lost. Therefore, actuation occurs when external environmental variables change the magnetic field that permeates the solenoid valve.

Solenoid valve assemblies are generally made using steel or aluminum. There are many different advantages associated with the use of these materials. For example, aluminum offers a long service life and excellent lubricity, while the material known as steel offers high strength and durability, an optimal distribution of weight, and the ability to meet demanding operating temperatures. However, the most common type of solenoid valve assembly includes a rubber insulating sleeve and the valve itself is made of brass.

There are several additional methods for the control of the flow through the solenoid valve. This includes the use of pressure differential, actuation pressure, and the actuation of a series of pulse width modulation pulses. This is accomplished through the use of tappet plates and the utilization of an electronic control signal.

The specific pulse widths that are utilized are generally chosen based on the mechanical properties of the part being used and the pressure differential present in the process gas mixture. Additionally, special types of insulation can also be employed to achieve this same effect.
